Gah. I wish the bevelstroke series was continuing on.. I can't seem to like the smythe smiths but I am intrigued with Iris' character

Still has the historical detail, humor and HEA I expected from Julia Quinn. Plus, I give credit where it's due, she wrote the suspenseful parts very well. Also, worthy to note that despite this being here 10th book in this world, she still manages to create new and interesting characters.

Was hoping for something deeper than the love at first sight trope, especially since the exiled Daniel could have been such an interesting character. The scenes with interaction between the younger sisters are fast and fun.

Having bumbled my way through a few of Quinn's novels, I've come to terms with the fact that they just aren't my cup of tea. There's nothing egregiously wrong with them (if you don't mind a quirky narrator and lots of padding), but there are only so many times the two main characters can discuss the weather and unicorns (yes, unicorns) before I start to wonder whether I should be reading something more worth my time.

For some reason I decided to start reading this at a terribly late hour and finished in the same sitting. When I finished, I was left puzzled about my feelings towards the book and even a couple of hours later, I'm not sure if "it was ok" or I "liked it."

I can honestly say that I was not craving a book about Daniel. If anything, I would have loved to learn more about Iris, Daisy and their family of flowers or Sarah. I am glad that we got to see his side of the duel and that's about it. Miss Wynter was interesting enough, and I can see where some of the groundwork of not wanting to be noticed was laid in Just Like Heaven, but to me, it almost felt like there was going to be a big reveal of Marcus knowing her from somewhere.

This book felt a bit dark to me, which led me to think about her previous books which have had: kidnapping, blackmail, and a serious injury. I don't think any of those stories have made me feel uncomfortable, and there's a strong chance I'm forgetting what happened in any of the series outside of Bridgerton (and even then 6 & 7th books are a blur), What Happens in London, and Smythe-Smith. My point being there may have been an attempted rape in them, but I don't really remember. When Annelise was with George, I felt uncomfortable and skimmed through it. I honestly was expecting the worst.

Then at the end when George was holding her captive and was turned on? Ew. I understood it not as that he was only turned on by her, but that he was turned on by violence against women. Which ew. Honestly, I can accept Hugh's bit of crazy about shooting him. I think it was completely fair and a bit funny. I enjoyed his dry sense about the fact that he had good aim while Daniel was freaking out. Hugh was an interesting character and I did like him, but I also worried about him, his relationship with his father, and the fact that he was willing to use suicide as a bargaining tool.

As to the rest...Daniel, you just got home from being abroad for 3 years, where your mother was depressed and actually, all of your family was sad and missed you and you're chasing after a woman? I don't care if she is the love of your life, c'mon! Priorities, have them. It did make me sad that there was so little Daniel and Honoria interaction. I wanted to see if he still called her Bug and him and Marcus have man to man chats about the wedding/friendly teasing.

That said, the little bit that we did see of his mom, was awesome! She was diagnosing wounds and hunting down the bad guys that took her daughter in law.

I did love Anne's charges: Harriet, Elizabeth and Frances! They were funny, high-spirited and I am such a sucker for family, especially when they squabble.

I, personally, do not see how this story can be considered lighthearted even if it has a happy ending. There was almost manslaughter, attempted rape, attempted murder, burglary, kidnapping of a minor, kidnapping of an adult, living in fear for at least 3 years, attempted facial disfigurement, threats, being banished by her family--is that emotional abandonment?, etc.

Overall, this book wasn't a right fit for me, but it seems it is a right fit for others.
