When reading (listening) to this book I found myself standing with a half folded shirt in my hands for 10 minutes because I was so enthralled that I forgot about what I was doing. Julia Quinn is a whitty joy as always.

I like this series so much more than her Bridgerton books. They're much sweeter and way less problematic.

One does not expect much from this kind of novel, but it still managed to let me down. It had its twists and intense moments, but the characters were so... boring, I guess.

The premise was interesting enough since both main characters, Daniel and Anne, had their respective enemies and there was this vague mystery of who was behind what action, but the romance part? Disappointing! And it's a shame, because the couple had some nice moments together that could bolster a romance, but the fact that both characters were basically horny as heck since the moment they met was... well... yeah... Apart from that though, the winning details of the book were the 3 charges of Anne; the conversation between the children/tweens really gave a familial vibe to it and albeit I don't have any sisters, I could relate myself immensely.

But moving on to characters, Anne was the one who disappointed me the most. She was trying to be a combination of an innocent, independent, terrified, strong and horny woman and it just did not work that well. I could understand up to point her traits and behavior and it was very understandable when she had panic attacks too, but 8 years passed with that fear in her heart and on the first day she meets a man, she feel like giving almost everything away? It seemed way too unrealistic for me. And then she kept going back and forth to "No, I can't because this and that," and after that "I will just live in this moment and move on!" But she never moves on, she keeps doing the same thing over and over again.

Daniel on the other hand is pretty much the token male in Quinn's books, the handsome earl with the rakish smile but with impeccable manners and immense respect. He was horny since the first second as well, but I'm biased since basically all men act the same so I'm used to it. However, it was still a bit too much since almost no conversation could be had without him wanting to jump her.

I quite liked the villain as a villain, because it was kind of fresh that level of "insanity", but my heart goes to Hugh and damn, I hope one of the next books involves him, because I want a level-headed and emotionless genius to have his happy ending. Either way, this was a fun read, but the characters needed way more polishing.

Sometimes I wish I lived in Regency England so that I could wear pretty dresses, drink tea, and go shopping for a living. Then I read a book like this that reminds me why I'm glad I live in the 21st century, where women actually have rights

This was really great except the ending was a little too sweet for my liking. Crazy shits going down and everyone is professing love and shit.

Overall the story was great, both characters are running from threats, he's returned home and give up running but she hasn't, then suddenly one of their pursuers tries to harm one of them and they both become quite angry (him) and scared (her).

Hugh's father is chasing him because he accidentally shot Hugh drunk in a duel and nearly killed him (Hugh was legit a character in this book I was really hoping to get more of and I will because next book yay) and she's running from a crazy ex she accidentally cut when he tried to force himself on her. Throughout we're left wondering if Hugh's father really is standing down on hunting Daniel, and
SpoilerI'm really glad he had.

Anyway I'll read the next one soon, hopefully.
