Like many, I came to this after seeing the movie dozens of times and absolutely loving it. All told, Who Censored Roger Rabbit? is a completely different, though altogether rewarding experience. As a partial send-up, partial homage to the hard-boiled detective genre paired with ludicrous cartoon humor on the page, Gary Wolf's work is truly unique, and the juxtaposition between the two creates a zany, fun reading experience. The mystery plot is also solid and will keep readers guessing through multiple twists and reveals. Admittedly, though, the mystery can get convoluted at times, while the Looney Tunes-esque humor occasionally grows a bit repetitious.
All told, I'd recommend this to anyone who loves the movie and wants to discover the seeds for how it came to be.

Picked this up because of the movie, and was pleasantly surprised by just how different it is! Totally different plot, with much more depth placed on what life is like in world where toons are people. It explores adult themes, as well as racial tensions between humans and toons, and puts those things side-by-side with the ridiculousness of cartoon logic/physics. I found the characters loveable and the mystery itself was fun! I really like the ending, because its really not what you would expect with how oddly quiet it is. Anyway if you liked Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Cool World, I think you'll like this!

This book is a remarkable take on racism in entertainment, had some of the best film noir language and setting, and is close enough to the film to be familiar but distinct enough to strongly hold its own. I think each is hitting the metaphorical nails with very different hammers.

So here’s the thing. I definitely REALLY wanted to like this book and love it because the movie is so near and dear to my heart. I’d say that the main murder plot point was something that I had figured out early but the murderer seemed unsolvable. It was like one of those things from when I’d read Encyclopedia Brown books or Clue books and all of a sudden a solution was there out of left field. Something that readers would never be able to figure out. Bleh. But out of loyalty to the movie, I will eventually read the rest of the series.
And don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t horrendous. I didn’t struggle through it. I really liked it but the ending turned me off. I loved how Gary K. Wolf described the speech bubbles and Roger’s expressions. Even Baby Herman made me laugh! I just didn’t realize it would be so different from the movie. It was a completely different plot.

Utterly absurd, slightly dated, yet pretty enjoyable too. I liked the ballon speech bubbles for the Toons, the doppelgängers, weird genies with a grudge, and the subterfuge
