Would have loved it a bit more hopeful, or with a more satisfying conclusion, but the MC has a really god, funny and quick-witted narration.

“I won’t be your dog, but if you’re half the wolf I think you are, you’ve found a fox to run with” -Kinch Na Shannack

Though my quote references the beginning of Kinch and Galva’s relationship, without a doubt my favourite element of this read was the love and relationship shared between Kinch and Norrigal.

Before that though. This was such an amazing read, and I believe it’s my first real dive into fantasy, where things simply don’t exist and are created on the page (I will be reading this genre much more very soon.) I’ve never been more invested in a world than in this book when a place would be mentioned and I’d hurriedly flip back to the beginning to reference the map and calendar.

The way Buehlman writes banter between his characters creates such a quick connection with me, that by the 4th chapter I was invested in the life of a slimy bastard with very dark grey morals.

Back to the romance subplot. It was incredible. From something I wasn’t at all interested in, to the only moment in this book that made me cry. The idea of a marriage lasting a single month yet cut short even then is so beautifully tragic and grim. And as an added bonus, Buehlman was able to invoke such a gut punch with a single dead tree.

So close to being my top novel of the year (Ironically my number one of the year so far is another Christopher Buehlman novel called ‘Between Two Fires, definitely go read that if you haven’t) And more than good enough for me to have already pre-ordered Daughters War. Can’t wait to see what the goblins really did and how the takers managed to eradicate the horses.

The best heroic fantasy book I've read in over a year.  The prose is engaging, fresh, clever, and funny.  The world is richly drawn, with distinct and original cultures.  The whole thing sings with originality.  There's mystery, peril, tragedy and laughs.

Recommended for jaded fans of fantasy fiction who want something fresh in the genre.

I feel like I really should have liked this book, but there is something I just cant put my finger on that created too much of a disconect. Might be able to figure it out in time, cause I felt that the first pages really promised a story I would enjoy, but for now I just couldnt really get into it or get invested at all.

What a crass little story, loved it. The magic system and the world are fascinating. Looking forward to the second in the series.
