i only started this book after being heartbroken by the tv series finale, and i am not sure i should have gone through with it. both eve and villanelle have little to no personality on the pages, v’s only personality trait is sex, while eve’s is worrying about whether she should care about fashion more (should’ve started a count at this point, i swear it was mentioned about five times). the murders in the show are far more exciting and so are the side characters. the t slur is present in the text, so that also speaks volumes. not a very pleasant read. most likely won’t read the rest of the series considering i am scared how a man could write a wlw relationship. yikes.

It's difficult to rate this without taking into consideration the show--Killing Eve. The only reason I picked up these novellas is to read more Killing Eve content and potentially parse out where I thought season 4 might lead. Instead, this was very reminiscent of r/menwritingwomen and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Here are a few of my major critiques and notes I made while reading:
-Eve is only 29 in the novella--very interesting decision to age her up. I wonder if they were wanting an older actress to begin with or they felt Sandra Oh was the best fit and just went with it. Either way, I think the significant age different works best for their dynamic
-Villanelle has a COMPLETELY different backstory. We are given it in the first handful of pages in the books as opposed to season 3 in the show. I think that would significantly affect how a person responds to Villanelle's violence. As awful as the content was, I do prefer the show's background. It made more sense with show V's characterizations.
-Anna again is different. Sexual assault warning with her--not by V!! I'm interested to see if she's going to be brought up again.
-One quote in particular about Eve left a bad taste in my mouth: "Do you think I should do something about, you know, the way I dress? That female intuition comment makes me worried I'm sending the wrong message?" Ew. Eve does not need feedback like that. She eats misogynistic men who view women as objects for breakfast.
-Eve is VERY self conscious of her looks. Very distracting based on Sandra Oh standards and how she acts in the show
-Transphobia is BORING Luke Jennings. BORING. There's a "ladyboy" minor character named Janie where some pointless and cringy transphobic language is used. Totally unnecessary.

Overall, I am disappointed and underwhelmed. There's a good chance I will read the rest of the novellas just to see where they go, but I'm left very happy that PWB and the rest of the female writers had a hand in the TV show rather than Luke Jennings.

Having read this book previously, I knew that I was going to enjoy it whilst refreshing my memory to continue the series, but I forgot just how much I enjoyed it the first time around.
I love the Killing Eve TV show that is based on the books and that’s what drew me to the books in the first place, but I find that these are so much better (as is usually the way when things are adapted for TV series or films). The book goes into so much more depth about who Villanelle is and who she was before she became the lethal assassin that we now know her as.
Villanelle has quite a few flashbacks of her previous life which gives us the insight into how she came to be and how she came to choose her new name. I find it fascinating reading through her flashbacks as it shows you exactly what shaped her growing up and that becoming an assassin actually saved her from a worse fate.
We also meet Eve and follow her through a number of cases before she settles on a female assassin that is killing people who don’t seem to be connected. Towards the end of the book we meet her full team, who I think will play a prominent part in the sequel book.
I’m so glad that I decided to refresh my memory by reading this book again before starting on the second in the series. Luke Jenning’s writing flows beautifully that I couldn’t put this book down and read it in one sitting.
