I read this book as child and wanted to reread to gain new perspective as an adult.
When I read it as a child I probably focused on its colorful illustrations and the direct message about protecting the environment. The advocacy line, "I speak for the trees," inculcated in me the importance of caring for nature and environmental activism.
As an adult, I can peel the onion and see that The Lorax is not just a tale about environmental conservation. It is also a critique of unethical capitalism. The Once-ler, who represents unchecked industrialization and greed, exploits the Truffula trees to manufacture Thneeds, a product marketed as versatile and necessary but useless, nonetheless.
Dr. Seuss warns us against the dangers of prioritizing profits over the planet and consumerism, slowly turning into a grim future where natural resources are depleted, and ecosystems are destroyed until our own demise.
It is also a call to action to remind us that it is up to us using our human agency to stop injustices (any type of injustice as a matter of fact) through my favorite line ever:
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.” Dr. Seuss

Actually upping my rating after reading it to science classes during National Children's book week.
My kids really love this book. And I admit it, it's growing on me.
I may be one of the few adults who didn't care for this book. Too preachy, too predictable, too dark. Not my type of Dr. Seuss at all!

I loved the story I wish the ending was different though
