One of my most favorite books.
At first I thought this book was a 4.5 stars because I left it annoyed. Why did Theo need to die in the way he did? Why did he keep his identity a secret from the people who mattered most? But after book club, I realized - I am being MUCH too picky with my 5 star ratings if I can talk about a book with passion and interest for an hour and a half and still feel like I have more to say and still not rate it five stars. If you aren’t a Christ follower, much of the beauty of this book would likely go unappreciated. I can see how it could come off as preachy to a non-Christian, but it came off as nothing short of poetry to somebody who longs for the glory of heaven. This book is slowly paced in all the right ways, and pays attention to all the right details. I feel like I have been impacted and encouraged by Theo, just like the recipients of his portraits. The intentionality with which he went about life, his openness to see the saintliness in every person, and his pursuit of love and beauty were all incredibly inspiring. I wanted to reread it almost immediately after finishing! The ending felt abrupt, but the more I think about it, the more I appreciate that it wasn’t all perfectly tied up into a bow at the end. Theo was simply a man, not an angel, and had unresolved relational issues and died in an anti-climatic way. And yet, he was able to bless so many, and taught others to live harmoniously with both their grief and their joy.
