This book was a lot of fun. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book with such a matter-of-fact narrator or protagonist. Mattie Ross is a no-nonsense 14-year-old looking for a man with “true grit” to avenge her father’s death, but she has more grit than anyone else in the book! The movie is one of my all-time favorites, and the book did not disappoint at all!

I'm so glad I finally read this book, having loved the John Wayne movie since I was a child. I loved the main character, Mattie, with all of her wit and spunkiness. Naturally, Rooster Cogburn is a character very dear to my heart. "Fill your hand, you son of a bitch!" Sorry for the cussing, but, man I love that part. If you love a good western, don't pass this one up.
True Grit follows a 14 year old girl getting revenge on her Father's killer. Along the way she groups up with two gritty marshals to bring down the killer and the gang he rides with. It's a simple story and an enjoyable one at that.
It was a bit of a slow burn at first. After a little while I began to warm up to the main character Mattie's narration. In a way reminiscent to Huckleberry Finn, her plain narration of extraordinary events is interesting and funny a lot of the time. People are stabbed, shot, and hung and Mattie reacts like she is seeing someone hang laundry.
Rooster Cogburn and LaBeouf are the two men Mattie meets and it is a lot of fun watching them argue that their way is the best. There aren't many characters to this story but the one's that are here are great.
This was a refreshing read, devoid of convoluted plot lines and crazy twists that is all the better with its simplicity. I will definitely be revisiting this book in the future for a short charming ride through the remnants of the "Wild West".

I listened to this as an audiobook narrated by Donna Tartt and it was a pleasure.
First off the writing was amazing. Portis captures the voice of a young girl in the Post Civil War West who as a much older woman has written the story of her adventure. Mattie Ross is 14 years old, but has the sensibilities of the old spinster she is destined to become.
Donna Tartt's narration is FANTASTIC. Since the entire book is a first person narration her "Matty" voice is perfect.
I'm well familiar with the John Wayne version of this movie and have watched the Jeff Bridges version too. Both are very good in their own right, but this book surpasses them with ease.
I highly recommend this. Especially in Audiobook.

If you must watch a film version, avoid the sentimental foolishness of John Wayne, a depiction as far from this perfect and unadorned gem as possible. This book will reward every encounter.
