“People do not give it credence that a fourteen-year-old girl could leave home and go off in the wintertime to avenge her father's blood but it did not seem so strange then, although I will say it did not happen every day.”

How’s that for a first line?! I loved this book so much. So smart and (perhaps) unintentionally funny. Donna Tartt’s audio narration was fantastic! Mattie Ross has to be one of the best narrative voices ever written. Im already planning to reread it in print in a couple of years.

ok pop off hailee steinfeld. mattie feels so authentic and also serves very hard.
adventurous funny tense fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

A real landscape, unforgiving, forbidding, like its characters. Would love to see a movie, but would it do the book justice? An actually funny book with many memorable moments and lines, my favourite being: He thinks they is a horsefly on his back!
Mattie is definitely annoyingly precocious, but at times her 'Sunday School Piety', as Donna Tartt puts it, can make you snort at the right moment. And also all the repeated lines, like Mattie's I have a good lawyer, and Tom Chaney's Everything is against me; nothing is going right for me, both somehow started to get funnier and funnier.
Do wish they got to meet one last time, but it was quite clear that Rooster couldn't handle emotions or commitment to any one thing for too long. But I guess that makes it the perfect cowboy/wild west/outlaw story.  Definitely should be a required read at school.

This books star was def the mc. She was so enjoyable to read from. The story was a little short and abrupt for me but I also get that that aspect really worked for it. I think I’m into westerns and I’m okay with it.

I love both movies. Both are brilliant and excellent.

I was surprised to find this book just as good if not better. The voice of Mattie Ross is unique in literature. It gives a sense of being there. If I was a teacher of American history, this wonderful novel would be on my recommended reading list. Full of wit and reserved humor many of the phrases in my book are highlighted. Some I read a second time. The dialogue is wonderful and fits each character.

Full of action, introspection, and believable characters, I recommend this book to anyone who can read.

I really liked this one. It is fun and very well written and I will absolutely be chceking Portis' other works. The rating is really because I managed to drag this book for so long. So much so that.I considered quitting at several different occasions, but would always go 'let's at least finish this page' and would get sucked back in.

A fantastic, raucous classic. The voice of Mattie Ross is unforgettable and True Grit’s simplicity only displays the quality of its ingredients. I very much enjoyed Donna Tartt’s audio narration also.

I've been seeing this book cropping up here, there and everywhere the last year and almost bought it a few times. I saw the Coen brothers version and quite liked it despite not having much regard for the 'western' genre. Still, the library...

The writer of the intro waxes lyrical about the joy of the book and many others review it highly (I was most intrigued by the cover quote from Roald Dahl). It just didn't do much for me. It's certainly not bad - it has an interesting narrative voice, Mattie is a great character and the story clips along. There's a good use of language though the repeated practice of placing slang in quotes annoyed me.

Ultimately though it was a little too sparse. The first half is scene setting and very little of consequence whereas the finale is rushed through. I think the Coen's actually managed a really good adaptation and maybe that coloured things for me. Still. Different to some of the things I read and short but it won't sit on my favourites for all time.

Homey and adventurous, I love the spunk and GRIT of Mattie Ross. I read this as part of my foray into the western genre and it was a delight.
