I debated between 3 and 4 stars for this one. I felt like the subject matter (amercana meets slavic folklore) deserved 4 stars. Overall though the story never managed to grab me and despite being a quick read seemed to take quite some time to finish.

I know a few of my friends would like this. It’s a four star because it was well written m, especially in terms of characterization and imagery. It didn’t, however, thoroughly merge magical realism well. A good read.

Russian fairy tales meets Southern Gothic

A wondrous, gripping, amazing read, filled with rich characters, dark magic, violence, gore, death, and love. I can’t wait for the author’s next book!

I thought about dnf this book so many times. I just didn’t enjoy it but I really wanted to.

This book was really interesting, and the characters were compelling. Maybe it was the quick pacing-perhaps meant to disorient the reader a little bit-but I found myself having reread the beginnings of the sections to figure out who's point of view it was. I think it was worth it though!

Nothing inherently wrong with it, just not my thing, I guess. You will love this book if you like casual magical realism, post-apocalyptic stories taking place in The Deep South, and very intimate, potentially gruesome (not too much, though) violence. You will not like this book if you enjoy well-developed plot lines and further insight into world-building/character development. I felt like this story was just me watching a few characters complete some tasks and wrestle with some bad guys until the end, no real story or insight other than some things that happen to some people.
