The Kate Daniels series quickly became one of my favourites in the Urban fantasy genre and I eagerly awaited the arrival of my pre ordered copy of Magic Slays, the fifth installment.
After the stunning revelations in Magic Bleeds, Kate is having to reestablish herself. She has left the Order to start her own private investigation business and has taken her place at Curran's side as his mate. Yet both situations are fraught with complications and Kate is struggling to accept her new roles. In the midst of her personal crisis of confidence, Kate learns some devastating truths about her family, but there is little time to dwell on the repercussions of her history. Kate becomes involved in a bizarre assassination that reveals a doomsday device that threatens the magical community of Atlanta. It leads not only a dramatic race to identify the cult and prevent the bomb from being detonated, but also the only means to save the life of Kate's ward, Julie.
While Kate and company have to fight their way through a group of crazed fanatics, and the plot in this installment is as fast paced and action packed as always, it is Kate's growth that really stood out for me.
What I enjoy most about Kate is her ability to not only fight, but also think, her way out of situations. No matter the circumstance she pushes, determined to find a solution that resolves best for everyone involved. Her choices are not without risk but I admire her courage and determination. Equally, I like the glimmers of vulnerability we see, her insecurity in her relations with Curran and her fears for those close to her. I think i have a bit of a girl crush on Kate really but I think I would be willing to take her own for a place at Curran's side. *deep sigh of longing*
Fans of this series won't be disappointed in Magic Slays, I expect that most, like me will simply be desperate for the next book. If this isn't a series you have started yet, make the time - it's totally worth it!

I really liked this one, not my favorite of the series so far, but it was quite enjoyable. We have a scheme of plots that are out to destroy every magical creature alive, and Curran and Kate are put right in the middle of it. What was most admirable was see these two fumble a bit in their relationship and be challenged in the love they have and those they are determined to protect. This book broke my heart at times, and really tests you emotionally...but there is plenty of action, drama, mystery, and passion!! A fabulous addition. Can't wait for more.

I LOVE how this series isn't getting stale, there are still complex plots, many times featuring mythology I haven't heard of before, which is unusual. The reason for 4/5 stars is that Kate and Curran's dialogue got REAL CIRCULAR in this book, and there was none of the fun flirtiness from the previous books, just heavy conversations and Alpha dominance, which is getting a bit out of hand. I have a feeling things will shift in the next few books, or I hope so at least. Otherwise, I may start rooting for another male lead...

Another excellent instalment where we see a broadening of the magic community and a shift away from the pack. Kate's insecurities with Curran are not entirely convincing and require leaning into her life as a loner. But otherwise excellent.
Another highly entertaining book in the Kate Daniels series - I really like these characters and the action/plot/dialogue is very well paced.
Can I just say how much Ilona and Gordon rock? This book *glump*. I couldn't tear myself away from it. So the gang is back (I missed Raphael *sad face* Hopefully he'll be back soon) in this fifth installment of the Kate Daniels series. Kate started her own PI but she's lacking in the client department until she's approached to find a missing inventor and his invention. Meanwhile the pilots to the undead are fainting. And kate has to deal with the whole new responsibility of being the Beast Lords mate. Requires a lot of finesse which Kate drastically lacks.
You'll be laughing through this book and I think even new readers will get choked up in this one.
Also, I absolutely loved one of the themes in this book. Ghastek brings it up and so does Curran and Kate. I wish I could give the book extra points just for that. I don't want to say much more about the theme cause of spoilers. But read this book it'll be worth it (hell, just read anything by Ilona and Gordon they're awesome. I have never been disappointed.)
Also, I just have to say as a Princess Bride fan I love all of the references to it. Makes a fangirl happy.
