Another highly entertaining book in the Kate Daniels series - I really like these characters and the action/plot/dialogue is very well paced.

Can I just say how much Ilona and Gordon rock? This book *glump*. I couldn't tear myself away from it. So the gang is back (I missed Raphael *sad face* Hopefully he'll be back soon) in this fifth installment of the Kate Daniels series. Kate started her own PI but she's lacking in the client department until she's approached to find a missing inventor and his invention. Meanwhile the pilots to the undead are fainting. And kate has to deal with the whole new responsibility of being the Beast Lords mate. Requires a lot of finesse which Kate drastically lacks.

You'll be laughing through this book and I think even new readers will get choked up in this one.

Also, I absolutely loved one of the themes in this book. Ghastek brings it up and so does Curran and Kate. I wish I could give the book extra points just for that. I don't want to say much more about the theme cause of spoilers. But read this book it'll be worth it (hell, just read anything by Ilona and Gordon they're awesome. I have never been disappointed.)

Also, I just have to say as a Princess Bride fan I love all of the references to it. Makes a fangirl happy.

January re-read: Derek and Julie are excellent secondary characters. Ascanio, the young hyena shifter, is annoying but shows how well Andrews writes to get a character to irk you but you still cheer for them. I loved seeing Kate act as the alpha while Curran was down and out.

Andrews just keeps getting better and better with each Kate Daniels installment. How she does it we may never know, but it doesn’t matter as long as she keeps writing.

As the fifth book of the series you think you know about everything there is to know about the main characters. Kate holds an interesting past that we had been lead to believe was complete in its’ telling, funny how viewpoints can be twisted around.

The chemistry between Kate and Curran is raging strong as ever as they learn to live with each other. Their relationship is a give and take with some punches here and there, as it should be with two strong alpha characters. The fact that Kate is no longer alone changes her whole outlook; what her father can do to those she cares for; what Kate would do to protect those she cares for, and that she might actually have a future. A very big change for her deal with even as she works to keep her business from going under and preventing the whole city of Atlanta and its’ occupants from being wiped out. Good thing she has a nice big kitty to curl up with when all is said and done.

So good you won’t put it down. Andrews also manages to leave us hanging just a little bit so we can all go crazy waiting for the next Kate Daniels book, can’t wait!

May Contain Spoilers

This volume of the Kate Daniels series started with a huge bang. After a navigator loses control of a vampire, Kate has to head off a blood-thirsty vampire before it wreaks havoc near her office. This adventure will seem tame after she’s hired by the Red Guard to locate a missing inventor that they had snatched from their protection. They don’t know what he working on, but the proto-type was stolen too. Oh, and can Kate keep a lid on her investigation? If word gets out that the Red Guard had a client kidnapped out from under their noses, they will obviously lose face – and lots of business.

I am addicted to this series. I enjoy all of the characters, and look forward to making new acquaintances. Since Kate is no longer part of the Order, she has a tougher time taking care of business. Without her Order credentials to force doors open for her, she has to do things by the book, and that’s not always easy. Especially after the Order tarnished her rep after the fight with Erra. She doesn’t really want to take the Red Guard job, but since it’s her first case in a month, she doesn’t have much choice.

Turns out that the missing inventor was working on a machine that obliterates magic – and kills everyone with magic within its operational radius. Desperate to find the machine before the terrorist group who have stolen it can wipe out Atlanta, as well as the Keep, Kate grabs at any lead she can find, but they always turn up empty. When Julie is attacked by a shifter and starts going loup, the case takes an even more personal turn.

I liked getting an inside glimpse at the People, and would like to know even more about them. As Kate’s powers are revealed, little by little, I wonder what else she can do. She takes several emotional blows in Magic Slays. She discovers that her mother might not have been the loving, compassionate woman she thought she was, and that Voron may not have had her best interests at heart. Voron’s true intentions for her struck a stinging blow that I don’t know if she can overcome. He set up her greatest weaknesses, the inability to trust others or ask for help, and I don’t know if it’s possible to forgive him the final endgame he had in store for her.

Book 6 is on my hold list at the library. Hopefully it comes in quickly!

These books are fantastic. Even in audio

No more of the teenage angst romance silliness, that she decided to put in the last book, and back to a Kate Daniel's story with some relation strengthening/building. Very interested in reading the spin offs.

Great Kate Daniels even the second time around. Roman is introduced, I hope he gets a novella, and we get Kate's mother's origins. The big bad this time is an anti-magic group.

So this time I was a bit bored at points, remembered too much maybe. Still this has a lot with the new twist of Kate running her own business, and the relationship and decision making process. Julie becomes a big part of the Kate Daniels world in this one, before this she was expendable as she was just a bit known. She becomes essential as Derek or Jim in this one.

Wasn't bored at all this time. I actually forgot about all the humor at the beginning of the book.
