Discworld Novels were a series of books I really got into around the age of about 13 to 16. Terry Pratchett really got me back into wanting to read books for fun!
I will have to go back and read them all though as forgot most of the stories by now ha ha...

This book was on a Goodreads list of books about dragons.

I read [b:Small Gods|34484|Small Gods (Discworld, #13)|Terry Pratchett|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1320490618s/34484.jpg|1636629] a while back and thoroughly enjoyed it. I hadn't tackled any of the other Discworld books because there were so very many of them (and I had a vague impression that a series that large much suffer from declining quality) and because I couldn't get into the first one. But this book seemed to have both a dragon and a library in it and further many of my friends seemed to like it. I was looking for some fun, comforting fantasy after staring and abandoning several Grim Grownup Literary Fiction books, and found I could borrow the Kindle book free from Overdrive.

I'm so glad that all happened. Guards! Guards! (great title, difficult to say correctly in casual conversation) is the first of the Watch books, which represent a sub-series of the Discworld novels.

They are hysterically hilarious. It's a spoof of procedural detective novels and of epic fantasy. It's got some serious social commentary, some unexpected twists, and truly wonderful characters.

And, as I found out later, even with as much as I enjoyed this book, it is much the weakest of the Watch books. Which means: It gets even better after this.
