Straż! Straż!

Terry Pratchett

4.25 AVERAGE

My first foray into Discworld... and it was fantastic!

Seeing the overwhelming amount of books that fall into this series (43 by most counts), knowing where to start in the world Terry Pratchett has created can seem rather overwhelming. Well thankfully there exists a tool on his website to help you randomly pick a place to start! So as one could deduce from this review, my selection was Guards! Guards!

TL;DR Review

its. huh. okay i guess. there were some realld funny parts, some nice quotes but it kinda druged on...

One of the best Pratchett's I've read so far - fantastic plot, absolutely hilarious.

Only in Pratchet's world could you have a dwarf who's a giant and a Dad's army style guard who are the voices of reason. As usual I read this with a smile as with his previous books.

This is the real stuff. While Mort showed glimmers, and Pyramids and Wyrd Sisters were very close to it, Guards! Guards! is the first fully formed, 100% Diskworld Novel, with Sir terry at the top of his game. it really is an astounding piece of work for its adherence to its internal logic, its adherence to the police/detective genre, its philosophical underpinnings about society and humanity, and the introduction of so many characters who become so fully rounded in such a short span of time.

If you're looking for the place to start Diskworld, this is the book. OK, there's an argument to be made for Going Postal because it has a more conventional chapter structure, but that's so far in that it is rife with spoilers - Guards! Guards is Diskworld with all the rough edges polished off of Pratchett's skills, and all of the potential of what is yet to come. It's simply outstanding.

Gritty noir detectives in a fantasy city--what's not to love?

Pratchett never disappoints. Loved this from start to finish and will definitely look into the rest of the guards stories
