The impressively inept city night watch’s main concern is making sure they don’t run too fast and actually catch to any criminals they may stumble upon. This seems to be working rather well for them until one of the city’s many secret societies, made up of some very average but very discontent townspeople, decides to summon a dragon as part of a plot to take control of the city. The ragtag night watch must join forces with Carrot, a 6-foot-6-inch tall dwarven new recruit who is passionate about justice, a noblewoman who raises mini swamp dragons, and an orangutan librarian in their attempt to save the city.
…chaos ensues…
Pratchett’s writing style isn’t the type of fantasy I typically tend towards, but absolutely hilarious. I’ll definitely be picking up more of his discworld novels in the future.
A couple favorite quotes
“It was probably the most circumspect advance in the history of military maneuvers, right down at the bottom end of the scale that things like the Charge of the Light Brigade are at the top of.”
“Let the other societies take the skilled, the hopefuls, the ambitious, the self-confident. He'd take the whining resentful ones, the ones with a bellyful of spite and bile, the ones who knew they could make it big if only they'd been given the chance.”
“People were stupid, sometimes. They thought the Library was a dangerous place because of all the magical books, which was true enough, but what made it really one of the most dangerous places there could ever be was the simple fact that it was a library.”

‘Well, well,’ he said. ‘So we're privy councillors now. Just fancy.’
‘Hmm,’ said the assassin.
‘I wonder what’s the difference between ordinary councillors and privy councillors?’ wondered the merchant aloud.
The assassin scowled at him. ‘I think,’ he said, ‘it is because you're expected to eat shit.’
