How nice is it when favorite characters return for visit? In this case, it is very nice indeed. This is a very charming book, one that makes light work of tying up loose ends, not just of Pride and Prejudice, but of other Austen novels too. Sadly, I found it to be redundant though, with the events rehashed by all the characters and during the inquest, trial, and end of the book too. That is a sin of writing and editing that should not be pardoned. Still, it was a welcome continuation of a fairy tale that has endured in human hearts for two centuries, so I will cut it some slack.
This almost ruined Pride and Prejudice for me. I'm surprised I even finished it. Blah story.
Obviously I am in the minority, but I enjoyed reading the book in 2011 and liked it even more last week on audiobook. I am a fan of P D James and although I loved Pride and Prejudice, I went into this book without expectation of a 'revamp' of the same. A good way to pass a day of housework, and the audiobook led me to two more books in this time period, so I am quite pleased.
I recently read her, Black Tower book for a book club. It was alright, didn't love it. This one I loved! A really well written continuation. I hope she manages to kick out another, maybe concerning some of the other Austen characters she references in this book.
- read for class. mixed feelings. on one hand i love murder mysteries, on the other hand i kind of struggled through this and james' attempt to replicate jane austen's prose. though her dedication at the beginning, where she writes that austen could have written this and written it better, absolves james of the attempt.
- all around okay.
Enjoyable mystery built on the bones of Pride and Prejudice. Mostly liked what she did with it.

Jane Austen is apparently having a moment, with many novels with Jane as a character, Jane as an amateur sleuth, and modern re-tellings of her books. This book imagines Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy's life at Pemberly after Pride & Prejudice. As the title indicates, their idyllic lives are interrupted by a murder, yet I found the storyline to be boring and repetitive.
This was a gift...would probably never have picked it up otherwise. Read some pretty bad reviews so I was pleasantly surprised. Am not really into mysteries but am now curious to read one of her other books.
