Grabbed this from the Audible catalogue for a road trip. I enjoyed the first few chapters/what I thought was the initial plot line - Adam is hunting down an evil warlock by tracking various magical items and occasionally kissing cute boys along the way. I loved where I thought this was going! One of the magical items leads him to Denver, where his older brother happens to need some magical assistance.

Then the entire book pivots to a huge evil spirit taking over Denver and there are elves and dwarves and leprechauns and reapers and time control....there was a lot going on and I struggled to really connect to the story.

I think there's potential for the second book to be more in line with what I thought this book was going to be but I'm not in a rush to read it.

Really enjoyed the first half of the book. But. Things really fell though at the end. It tried really hard to be grand with its end of the world antagonist, but the stakes felt so incredibly low because whenever anything bad occurred, it would be offset with a 180* turn to domestic trauma dumping.
The big bad escaped and killed a powerful creature, and in the next chapter Adam and his boyfriend are having a heart-to-heart in a Rainforest Cafe-type restaurant. It’s a rollercoaster of important, terrifying plot points and low stakes characters studies. It just jarring and not woven well together at all.
I was also hoping for this story to be about the two brothers working past their dislike of each other, and less about romance. Maybe there will be more of that in the next book.
Just disappointed because I liked the beginning so much.

I was expecting a fairly silly fun story and ended up pleasantly surprised. Not so much silly, by a fun story with interesting uses of urban fantasy troupes and really great character work.

I only wish it was longer. I think a lot of scenes and ideas could have had plenty of more time spent in them. It looks like the other 2 extant books are about the same length, too, so it will be interesting to see if things get expounded upon or if the esoteric feel of the magic remains throughout.

Hi

Cool story, I loved the worldbuilding and especially when there is Reaper
Loved the family problems / dynamics, we understand Robert / Adam and her mother, I want to see the relationship evolved , I hope in the next book.
And I loved Vic , I don’t know if he is the end game but I hope for it.
