4.5 rounded up.Was pleasantly surprised with this one. As most reviews I've seen, I had the same thoughts going in. Was going to be like a redneck dnd comedy feel. Where there were aspects of that, this book went a bit deeper into it. Had some good plot to it as well had real emotions and played heavy into character relationships and trauma, which really helped suck me in. I'm super excited for the next 2!

This is a fun, fast, fantastic read. Well written, diverse characters. This story describes elves, gnomes, dwarves, and other “known” magical beings as something quite different giving us a few chuckles along the way. I love when an author stretches the genre this way.
It’s a fun adventure with some complicated connected characters. The layered emotions that come along with a family who doesn’t quite get you is well done.
The MMC also has synesthesia which manifests in emotions described as having specific colors which I found such a delightful element of this sensitive and wonderful character. Will be staying tuned for what comes next.

A solid entry into the urban fantasy genre, including an interesting premise on the supernatural I haven't seen before. I would call this a low magic setting more focusing on relationships, specifically family relationships, then magic. I really enjoyed the read though and it sets up the next book in the series, which I will be reading, well. This is the type of book that I would confidently recommend to my friends who like the urban fantasy genre.
Aside: This is one of their books where I sometimes feel like screaming "poly relationships exist" at it. Like, I understand that would cut a lot of the drama but also come on.
It was fun to read a story that takes place in a city I lived in for over a decade. I could imagine all the locations and it was fun how they were integrated into the storyline rather than just mentioned. The love story is cute and the mystery is interesting. I plan to read the second book.

Hmmm… this one just didn’t work for me. The world building was interesting but at times too abstract and convoluted. I didn’t buy the end reveal/mastermind, it didn’t feel organic or cohesive with the rest of the story. Good concept and bones with disappointingly inconsistent execution which is a real shame because it had a ton of potential and queer paranormal is typically right up my alley.
So… 2 stars but I’m not actually going to record it as a 2 star read because if I’m going to go there, I feel like I should give a thorough explanation and I’m just ready to be done with this one.
Super thankful I was able to borrow this from the library as I’d be kicking myself had I spent money on it.
