A fast-paced book, easy reading with super simple language and short chapters that gave this a YA feeling. Adam is a hot mess of daddy issues, mommy issues, brother issues, ex issues, all sorts of issues. For some reason, he reminded me a LOT of Dean Winchester. (In fact, this whole thing reads like an SPN fic. šŸ¤”) He’s supposed to be a low-powered magic user (practically a normie) but somehow he still manages to beat all the odds.

I really liked the worldbuilding, the spirit realm, and how the Guardian towers were Tarot courts and the elves were manifestations of them. I also liked how they would lose parts of themselves as they ascended to their ā€œfull mantleā€ (aka the Prince of Swords ascends to become the King of Swords etc). The conflicts were straightforward and simple (and also relatively simply solved), and while I could see the interpersonal/relationship conflicts a mile away, they also worked. The ending was satisfactory and ended in a cliffhanger leading to the second book.

I enjoyed this. Good story. Solid characters. Fast read. Loved the overarching themes.

If Sam and Dean Winchester from Supernatural had a book baby with Harry Dresden from Jim Butcher's series, this would be the little bundle of joy.

Adam Binder has a gift, though he would not necessarily consider his empathetic and magical abilities to always be a wanted power. A terrible, rotten, no good being has a hold of his sister-in-law and he must do what he can to save her, his relationship with his brother and the whole of Denver.

This is a light urban fantasy with heart, remarkably wondrous descriptions, and a quintessential old beat up ride. -Sara S.

I don't give five star reviews to many stories. I need something to be well written and impactful to want to hand out that rating. This book definitely covered both bases. The entire story had a nicely constructed ebb and flow. I didn't get bored and the story didn't feel rushed.

Using both Adam and Robert's perspective delivered a very important message. Even when people live together perspective can be radically different based on just a few minor differences like a few years gap in age or a missed moment.

I am still angry with Robert. I am still worried about Adam, and I want to get to know Vic better. I couldn't wait for the next book. I downloaded before I finished this one. I am going to have to wait for the third one though. Sigh. Only a couple months though. I hope the narration is released simultaneously, because the performance was excellent.

I really wanted to love this one. It’s an urban fantasy with a main character I adored, but the plot just seemed all over the place. There were plenty of scenes I had to stop and re-read because I could just not follow what was happening. The characters, the magic, the other species, really the entire idea of this book should have been such a blast for me. However the confusing writing really soured my experience

I did not know this was going to have m/m romance. Pleasant surprise honestly this was picked up solely based on the title. This story was great the make setup is cool and a bit different. Had some ghostbusters mixed with epic fantasy feel. I’m definitely moving on to the next one in the series.

This was well written, I just found the magic and world building to be shallow and half-assed. Which is a bit of a shame since the characters were really very well developed and I actually gave a damn about them, just not the story or the stakes in which they found themselves.
