I am usually hesitant to read urban fantasies (or those set in the real world), but I fucking loved this book. Slayton avoids all the typical tropes that exhausted me in series like Jim Butcher, so this was a fresh and unexpected surprise. The magic and world building is so unique and really paints a beautiful picture of a magical world hidden beneath our sometimes depressing reality. The characters were fascinating and the way it explores their relationships really makes your reflect on your own. So excited for the sequel!

I'm so glad to have read White Trash Warlock to have met Adam Binder. I absolutely fell in love with Adam! Such a complex, tough, heartbreakingly soft at heart character. He's a witch estranged from his family, having been committed by his brother as a teenager, but in trying to track down his missing father, he ends up reconnecting with his family and healing some of the wounds of the past. Adam's characterisation drives this novel, and so many wonderful details are sprinkled through so that we truly understand him too. There were a few too many 'cameos' from magical beings for my tastes, without much time to develop their place in the world (I much preferred the patient, delicate worldbuilding of the tarot cards, for example), but just for Adam alone I'm ready to devour the whole series.

This definitely works in my interest of someone using limited/minor magical abilities, but maybe too much. Adam's abilities feel so ill-defined. It's like having a level 1 D&D character in a scenario that needs someone at level 10.

The characters are interesting, and the fantasy setting is unique, but it definitely needs more rules that might be developed in later books. It was also a nice surprise to find out this is a LGBTQ+ book, but also a bit too much love for the cops for my taste.

I'd consider reading the next two books currently available, but I don't know that I'd rush out to get them over other series I'm currently reading.

White Trash Warlock by David R. Slayton
You had me with a gay witch. This novel is a fast-paced read that dives into the magical world beyond our mortal realm. The descriptions of place and development of characters are wonderful. I immediately fell in love with Adam, the main character, and Vic (possible boyfriend). It thrills me that this is the start of a series because I can’t wait to see more of what they will encounter.

Most of the book is set in Denver. People that live here will recognize everything in the book. I’ve never read a better description of the old Casa Bonita. May the magical creatures always keep it going, and may the new real world mortal owners allow for some vegan options.

I want to thank NetGalley for providing an early copy of this book.

The story was kinda all over the place but I really liked the vibes.

Picked it up and out it down alot. It was hard getting through the first half of it but as soon as it picked up it was good. A lot of jaw dropping, i liked it. Now onto book 2
