Being a local, and reading that Denver was the main location, this was a pleasant surprise but thought it was interesting that there weren’t more specific references to city locations. We did get that Casa Bonita reference though!!
Growing up on a farm in rural America made this extremely relatable to me personally, regardless of sexual orientation. I wish I had this book when I was young, reading in the barn instead of doing my chores. To know that others like me were out there would have soothed a lot of angst. Representation matters, across every genre, and very excited about this as lgbtq fantasy. And it did a really good job of placing you in this tumultuous family with issues but that undeniable pull to always help out your family- even if they do put you in a looney bin or don’t accept you for who you are. I’m not defending it as right. Or that the author was even saying we all should offer family second chances because uh yikes. It just is relatable. It infuriated me when Adam even left to go help his brother but I could empathize doing something similar if my estranged sibling had called me. Siblings. Ugh. Love to hate them.
It did not do that great of a job of placing you in this fantasy world. I didn’t feel fully immersed in the spirit world the author creates. Later in the book I think it got better but it’s not quite on the level of Harry Potter or other fantasy novels that make it totally believable, transport you there. World making was a little lacking for me, personally. But maybe that’s the point? We’re learning about it as Adam does? Maybe.
Enjoyable, like the Denver references because I’m biased and I will continue the series. Looking forward to reading more!

I really liked the main character in this and was rooting for him in so many ways but the rest of the story - from the other characters to the plot - fell a bit flat. Doubt I'll read the next, so I'll never know if Adam actually gets his happy ending

Exclusively reading gay urban fantasy from now on after my messy breakup with the Dresden Files. ✌️

I liked and got annoyed with this book in equal measure, in both cases for the same thing, namely that the main romantic relationship was so ridiculously easy. On the one hand, it was lovely. On the other hand, OMFG COME ON.

Apart from that it seems like a promising start to a series; I will read the next one!

I’m so mad at myself for letting this languish on my TBR for 2 whole years!!

Gahhh so good. This filled the Harry Dresden shaped hole in my heart. Really great story and I can’t wait to dive into the rest of the series!

Don’t let the cover fool you - this isn’t a light hearted read. Packs an emotional punch

really surprised at how much I liked this. a fast read but a lot of fun.

as a gay man finding book written in the urban fantasy setting with relatable experiences it is so refreshing to see main characters with shared experiences. this is the type of book young me would have died to have. and adult me loves. a new take on the chosen one trope. its rare for a queer male lead let alone one written by a man so happy with this and currently devouring the second book now!

I loved this world! The story and characters were interesting, and had me flying through the pages. The world-building was excellent, which I always appreciate, especially in the first book of a series. Count me in for the next book.
