Reading for the second time. This book is still one of the best books I’ve ever read. The audiobook is phenomenal to listen as you read. Such an intricately woven story, beautiful characters, this will stay with you a long time.

Make your life beautiful for God. Only bits I didn't like were all of the jargon-y medical ones and the way Genet was handled towards the end.
Just wasn't in the mood for it and didn't have a slow 24-hour listen in me

This book had everything I like in a book: interesting characters, excellent writing, new/exotic/foreign places, philosophy, psychology, suspense... I recommend Cutting to Stone to anyone who likes those things when reading, even if they aren't pre-med/a doctor/in the medical field. It has a lot of medical terms, but not so much where a few visits to Wikipedia wouldn't set you straight.
And overall, the plot itself wasn't intriguing per se, but Verghese knows how to tell a damn good story. His story-telling style reminds me a lot of John Irving, which is probably why I tore through this like I did The Cider House Rules.

This book belongs in my “Top 10 of all Time” list. (There may be more than 10 on that list…)
This has the triple threat of beautiful language, stunning plot, and finely rendered characters. It isn’t like anything else I’ve ever read. It makes the reader consider the power of family, faith, and work. It leads to questions about leadership and power and love. It wanders paths of beauty that dead end in shock and grief and emerge to redemption.
Read it - especially if you are connected to the medical field. (Or love amazing literature.)
