I loved this book!!! There were so many layers to this - the history, the relationships, and the details of the world of medicine. I could read the book for a second time just to re-read the beautiful descriptions. I wanted to rush to read through the story since the plot was so compelling that at times it was hard to soak in the beauty of his writing. WOW - They say write what you know.... and boy did the author deliver.

I was torn between 3 and 4 stars for this book. I was always intrigued as I read, but it probably took me half the book or 300 pages to really get into it!

I enjoyed this and I’m glad I got around to reading this sort-of classic. I love a long family drama that spans decades and this delivered. I think what docks it the extra star is that the brothers’ view of romance/women is a little weird and I don’t love how they treat the romantic interest. She definitely suffers from “woman written by a man” syndrome. But otherwise this was interesting and moving.
