Man… the first hundred and fifty pages or so had me invested. Some good world building was definitely present. Ultimately, it started feeling repetitive and a bit boring at around  the halfway point. Plot holes like Swiss cheese that I’m hoping book 2 will clear up. I’m still going to read it, because the concept is very cool. Character development for Ayla was just not there, and I found her easy to dislike.

Am i late to the party? Yes. do i care? Absolutely not! Been hearing a lot about this one since it exploded on booktok years back so i finally decided to give it a try. Ngl i was slightly underwhelmed. Could be because the book was so hyped I had high hopes. anyway here’s my signature general list of things throughout the book:

Sapphic robot princess x maid
Def YA i think they were 16 or smth
Robot battling real emotions
Human vs. robot explored more in sequel
Human rebel groups
Enemies to lovers as in she was supposed to kill her but couldn’t
Dealing with parental disappointment and not living up to standards

In this world, automae are perfectly built robots modeled after humans without all the pesky lil things (emotions) who now dominate because of their superiorness. Ayla is a human servant whose family was killed by the automae ruler’s order so she joined a rebel group and now plans to kill the ruler’s daughter (Crier). She instead somehow accidentally saves Crier and then Crier makes Ayla her handmaiden. Crier also finds out that she was Made wrong with Passion and that compromises her and she starts doubting everything about herself. She’s betrothed to this evil on-the-rise automae revolution leader (his name started with a K that’s all i remember) who’s this giant rock in Crier and Ayla’s shoes. The main thing in this book was that Crier wants to finally start being taken seriously, act like the princess and join the meetings and such but she’s overlooked. She’s also a human-sympathizer among human-hater automae so not much good’s going for her rn! There’s some sort of human-automae segregation movement going around led by her bethrothed the K-dude and Ayla’s rebel group is also looking to revolt but she’s tangling with the enemy so some complicated stuff.

Idk it was all just very underwhelming. Nothing was really revolutionary but then again it was written in 2019 so maybe some of its themes just seem common to me now. Some people were also saying the sapphic angst goes hard here and there’s lots of pining but there really wasn’t. Their romance was very subtle locking of eyes and then bam they’re crushing. And i never understood why Crier’s “dad” didn’t take her seriously or let her give input during meetings it was just stated that “she’d never be good enough.” Did she do smth in her past to lose his trust? I have no idea! It’s not all bad though and it did hold my attention as I read it. Nothing really memorable, just that I really really really hated K-dude. My brain may not remember why but my heart def does! Kudos to author for that there’s very few times I’ve ever hated an antagonist so thoroughly.

So 3.5/5 and 9+ unless there was a sex scene which i also do not remember!
