Some mixed feelings on this book. I really loved parts of it! I was totally engrossed in the world building and found myself really rooting for the protagonists. I loved the main characters, did wish they had a few more moments together, but I enjoyed the contrast between both Crier and Ayla. The writing is clear and I rarely, if ever, was confused by what I was reading. Vaerla is a very good writer!
But, some moments of this book made me scratch my head and think, really? This is the thing? To be honest the book felt like a lot of build up to the next one in the series. There wasn't nearly a big enough climax to be a solid stand alone novel. I can tell it was very much already planned to have more books in the series.
In my case the pros did outweigh the cons so I gave it 3 starts and am excited to continue the series! Thankfully the sequel is already released otherwise I would feel a bit more upset by lack of real climax/action.

Couldn’t put it down because it was gay, but can’t pick up the second because it was slow.
