An interesting plot, but it kind of dragged in some places especially because the middle third repeated the first third.

This is a Victorian drama in true Dickensian darkness. Sue Trinder is an orphan and raised by Mrs. Sucksby in the London slums. Sue is offered to participate in a Con, become the maid of Maud Lilly and help Gentleman entice her in to marriage for her fortunes. But there are twists, and then there are more twists!

So long and dense. Made me tired to have to slog through it. It was a clever plot, but just got bogged down in the details. And the romance didn't really seem believable.

One of my favorite fiction reads (thus far) in 2021. Sarah Waters takes the reader on a rollercoaster plot of twists and turns and unpredictability. If you are looking for a thrilling read this is for you. Not for the squeamish, however.
