Ate in every way. Two very compelling heroines and characters that are complex and developed. A plot with so many genuinely unpredictable twists and turns. And romance!

Dickens like in setting, but feminist, told from women’s view, with mystery and love story

Okay this book that started out like an adventure becomes DARK. Dark, dark, dark, dark. Sarah Waters pulls no punches. It’s the book I got, a monstrously well-written book about the oppression and abuse of women, but not the book I signed up for. I had to take a week break two-thirds of the way through. Well done but I am thoroughly bummed out.

4 stars for the first plot twist. The story became a little long and a bit tedious for me. I would have been very happy and thought it a great story had it just ended with part one, leaving me to imagine what happened next. Ending after part two would have been satisfying, too.
