I had a similar problem with this one, like I had with A Flat Place (which is a memoir, not a novel though). I was really interested in the core topic of the story, but the merge with another thread, didn't really work for me and took more away from the power of the novel, than it added to it. Apart from some forced metaphors, the writing is strong. The personal becoming political, is always something I'm interested in, but trying to create a connection to the polyamorous relationship, didn't work for me and has been the weaker part of this novel. I would have been perfectly fine with the historical aspects connected to the family history. And with the polyamorous experience being left as the story for another book, because it is definitely an interesting topic too, but it felt too short here, to be really have its merit.

Undiscovered is a work of autofiction in which the author interrogates her family background. The book opens with her in a museum looking at pre-Columbian artifacts looted by an Austrian explorer, who is in all likelihood her great-great grandfather. And also a horrific racist as she discovers when she reads a book authored by him and left to her by her father shortly after the museum experience. For me, the book was at its strongest when she was grappling with this dual identity as the descendent of both colonised and coloniser. Once she tried to link this to her own complicated personal life, as part of a thruple with her husband and a female lover, and her own infidelity I was less interested, and am not sure the attempted connections stood up. I wish there had been more of the former and less of the latter.
