Listened on Audible and thought it would never end. Too much extra fluff and too long.
The thing about being an American, a Westerner, in Eastern Europe is that you just don't know what you're getting into. You think you do. Because you're you. Still trying to be compassionate, but keeping in mind all of the historical knowledge you've memorized in school, from books, from documentaries. But then you talk to someone and you realize that these are lives. These are lives that were lived and keep on living. Political ideas aren't human and so they are not subject to the same finality of death. I think that is what this book is about at its core. You don't know what you don't know until you meet it and shake hands with it.

I enjoyed this book beginning to end. While the characters and story are fiction, it has shined a new light for me on real history of a corner of the world that American students don't hear of unless they seek it out in their extended studies. If you believe, as I truly do, that those who don't understand history are doomed to repeat it, you will appreciate the setting and thoughtfulness of this book. The author says, and it reads true, that "I have composed my work of fiction in a spirit of respectful grief for those whose lives were touched by the real history on which it is based."

Great book, loved learning about another culture . Plot was evocative
Interesting mystery that takes place in Bulgaria. The setting and characters were well done, but the pacing was a bit off. I learned some history that I didn't know before.

I wanted to like this more than I did. I just felt the two stories were forced together and events happened too conveniently. I loved it for the culture and descriptions of Bulgaria.
This book is rather slow, but I was sucked in from the beginning.
