Such a fun and great collection of stories. I feel like only two of the stories are mid, but the rest are so good. The author also is just super creative. Like how did she come up with some of this stuff? Presidents becoming horses? Women becoming silk worms? This was just so refreshingly new.

These stories are creepy and beautifully written! I really loved this collection, and I think it deserves all the hype it's received!

I love magical realism and I love Karen Russell. She is a quirky likable author who interviews well. There were some stories in this collection I really loved such as "Reeling for the Empire" and "The Barn at the End of Our Term" but stories I felt considerably less for such as the title story and "The New Veterans." These stories are all very imaginative and I like the origins by which she writes which literally stems from any random thing. Watch her interviews, she's a trip. Some of these stories were lacking in something that I can't quite put my finger on and I was left a little disappointed. Other stories like "The New Veterans" had unlikable characters. I guess this isn't to say it was poorly written or anything, just not my thing. This is a collection I did not discover on my own. It was covered in a course on contemporary short fiction. Though there were a few stories I didn't like this was one of the collections covered in class that I had the most to write about which speaks for itself. Overall Karen Russell is a wonderful writer and I look forward to reading more of her work.
