This book had everything I wanted in it. Adventure, combat and slow burn romance and an intelligent and independent woman character to name a few. It's written wonderfully and I was never bored while reading it. It's still my favorite book and I've read many more since.

What an incredibly pleasant surprise this book was! I picked it up quite blindly (it was on my TBR but I couldn’t remember when I added it) and went into it without any expectations.

It had me HOOKED right from the start. The writing style is simple and to the point, a perfect balance between description and action, and you quickly find yourself unable to put the book down.
You get to the end of one chapter so quickly, and so many things happen, you just think… okay, one more! And one more!

Cas was a great main character with a lot of depths, and many side characters were quite fleshed out as well— Lena, Ventillas, even the Queen and King. Other side characters, who were more in the background, were just as pleasant.
I adored the relationship between Cas and his brother, Ventillas.

The political aspect woven with these investigation/true crime vibes were incredibly compelling.

Overall I wouldn’t say this book is groundbreaking in its plot or setting, especially considering I guessed the “big twist” but it is definitely executed in a way that felt quite refreshing to me.  I have no particular complaint and didn’t detect any notable flaw.

5 stars, without hesitation!

It's a satisfying fast paced read with good characters. It was compelling enough to stay up for. Plague is part of the story so you might expect this to be really dark but it came across more as melancholy but not in a depressing way. There is somehow a hopeful centre to it all that felt genuine and not naive. It's good! You should read it :)

I was trying to explain this book to someone when i was about 20% in. I started off by saying there's not much going on but realized that there's a lot going on! I started the book last month and would read it during work but picked it back up 3 days ago and had a hard time putting it down. It's such an engaging story. I truly fell for Cas as a main character.. he struggled with what he's been through for 3 years and all that trauma while still being a stand up guy with integrity. Of course I was all for the love interest and I was happy he was reunited with family and friends. But one of my favorite interactions was between him and the queen and how their dynamic changed from their first encounter to their last. I did predict the 'big twist' right before the reveal *literally the page before* but that still didn't take away from the enjoyment of the story and all that unfolded after. I will probably reread in the future if the story fades and I want to be reminded of it.

Year of the Reaper is a unique book (in my perspective) as in focuses on the aftermath of a plague. I thought it was very interesting to see how society rebuilds itself after the devastation of a mysterious illness. I usually read books where the disaster/disease happens in real time, so Year of the Reaper is breath of fresh air.

The characters are fun, charming, and trope-y, which I absolutely love. There's all kinds of people in the book's world and I had fun figuring out what other locations there might be in the Year of the Reaper. It feels realistic and unique to think that there's a bigger world out there (in the book) that hasn't been touched by the plague.

Cas' motivation to go home to Palmerin is relatable, making the reader empathsize with his plight. I certainly found myself wishing that he could just sit back and relax once he got home. But, NOPE, he just got to get involved with a royal assination plot. The way the disease was integrated into the plot twist was awesome too and I found myself shocked on the big reveal. After the big reveal, I was just so invested with the book and how everything will be fixed.

I have to say that there are two big plot holes that I wished were adressed more:

1. Why can Cas see ghosts?

2. What happens with an Brisia envoy arrives and sees that Jehan isn't Jehan???
