Did I read the same book as everyone else?

I read this fuckass 800-page book in less than three days, and I've been in a reading slump. So...I guess it wasn't completely awful? I think the nicest thing I can say about this book is that I found it entertaining. It was super easy to read (mind-numbingly so), and it shut my brain off so well I might've actually lost a few brain cells reading it. I cannot tell you how many times I've eye-rolled while reading this. It is so incredibly cliché.

Our female main character's name is Shannon. She is the tiniest human to ever have existed. Seriously!
You would not believe how small she is! If she stands up reallyyyy straight she is 5 feet tall (152 cm), and she only weighs 85 pounds (38.5 kg). Johnny bench presses double that! Compared to her he is a giant, measuring in at a whopping 6 foot 3 inches (190 cm)! And if you're worried about forgetting just how small she is, fret not! You will be reminded a minimum of five times every chapter!
Shannon is the personification of "I'm not like other girls". Johnny can actually talk to her, you know? All other girls just want to have sex and gossip, but Shannon is not like that! She's just so special! Everyone else only wants him for his body and status, but not Shannon. She doesn't care that he plays rugby or that he's famous, she only cares about him. Oh, and did I mention she's tiny? Like, really small!

Shannon is only 15/16 years old. This causes Johnny a great amount of grief because he is two years older than her and it is therefore inappropriate to start something with her. He keeps talking about she is so young and innocent, but that, of course, doesn't stop him from sexualizing her. He ends up getting over the age gap because she is so "mature for her age". I don't agree with this assessment, but then again, I'd argue Johnny is even more immature than Shannon. He also has this weird savior complex. He keeps calling Shannon "fragile" and "broken", and any time she is in a predicament, Johnny swoops in to save her. He seemingly loves punching people.

All the boys in this book (mainly Johnny and Gibsie) are raging horndogs. I get it—they're teenagers—but it gets to a fucking point. The only thing they talk about is sex and dicks and balls and pussy and tits and jerking off and ejaculation, etc. Give me a goddamn break. Even when they try to have a serious conversation, someone just has to throw in a dick joke. I don't mind dirty jokes, but give it a rest, lads. They also objectify women and speak about them in a demeaning way, which I don't even think was intentional. All the characters piss me off. They're immature and their communication skills suck ass. They also can't seem to learn from their mistakes. Shocker.

This is the slowest of slow burns. They don't kiss until page 737. Technically, Shannon kissed Johnny once before, but he didn't reciprocate the kiss so I'm not even sure it counts. Chloe Walsh somehow managed to make the relationship between Johnny and Shannon feel rushed/sloppy, even though this book is eight. hundred. fucking. pages. long. The pacing in this was so weird. It read like a Wattpad story (derogatory). There was no structure. It felt like she just kept writing chapter after chapter, hoping it would tie up nicely in the end. Binding 13 is in dire need of an editor. There is a scene on a bus that goes on for—I shit you not—57 pages. ONE SCENE!

There are so many weird scenes in this book. At one point Shannon is at Johnny's house and his mom wants to give him "the talk". She is under the impression that her son is a virgin, since he has never brought a girl home before. He tells her that he hasn't been a virgin for a long time. This woman then starts to CRY, devastated that he's "lost his innocence". He then proceeds to comfort her. What the actual fuck? I think this was supposed to be funny, but it's just weird as hell.

At one point, Shannon asked to see Johnny's injury (oh, yeah, he has a groin injury, btw). He reluctantly agrees and she drops to her knees and removes the towel from his lap. She then sits there and stares at his groin before leaning in and kissing his inner thighs. He obviously gets a hard-on. At this point in the book they haven't even properly kissed. Yet she is sitting there as if she's about to give him a blowjob. Keep in mind, this girl has only ever kissed one guy—Johnny—which barely counted. But you do you, girl?

There's a scene at the end of the book when Johnny is in the hospital, high as a kite. His family is in the room and he keeps talking about how his dick finally works again! He loves his dick and balls, thank god they're still there! And now he's finally gonna be able to jerk off again! And have sex with Shannon! He's really looking forward to that. Her tits are amazing!
He also keeps talking about how he's so in love with Shannon like the river, and how his heart just went boom when he saw her. This was actually very sweet, but then he had to ruin it by talking about how he would impregnate her one day. And then he keeps blabbering on about how much he likes her tits and her pussy and he wants to have sex with her, blah, blah, blah. Understandably, his parents (especially his mom) are a little uncomfortable with his ramblings. Again, I think this whole scene was an attempt by the author to be funny or cute, but it was honestly just headache-inducing.

I have to stop now before I give myself an aneurysm. I have no idea how to rate this book because I kind of hated it, but it was also entertaining. Like watching a car-crash. It was bad.

Anyway, stay tuned for my review of Keeping 13

Emotional damage: irreversible

"BOOM. BOOM. F*CKING. BOOM."

This book didn’t just wreck me—it redecorated my soul. I devoured it like it was my last meal before the apocalypse.

Shannon and Joey had my heart in a chokehold and my revenge fantasies on speed dial. I wanted to climb into the pages and throw punches. Every. Single. Time. 😭

I was vibing on Jonny's high... until my heart evacuated my body. 🥹😭

Chloe Walsh did not come to play. She came to emotionally assassinate—and I paid for it willingly. 💔

The story was good, but It went on unnecessarily long. The writer explained a lot and some bits seemed to stretch on forever. Also didn't love how after reading so many pages, you have to read book 2 for the actual end of what book 1 has been building up to. Shannon and Johnny were absolutely adorable and Gibs and Johnny's friendship was hilarious
