In this seventh book of the Anita Blake saga, Anita is recruited by the fire captain to help solve a series of mysterious arsons. There is an issue that involves Anita and the wereleopard pard, an issue with the werewolf pack, an assault against Jean-Claude, and the insufferable Richard makes another appearance. The death toll in this book was surprisingly small in comparison with some of the earlier books, but it was a good book overall.

Who would have thought, that Anita could fall face first into a lot more trouble than she thought she would ever be? I mean, yeah, some people did try to kill her, repeatedly, but hell, never before did the whole city suffer for it.

Unexplainable fires started to go up in the city and Anita Blake is called in to investigate, mainly because most of the joints that went up in flames were save houses for the newly made vampires of the Eternal Church. But at the same time Anita and Jean-Claude get a surprise visit by the european Vampire Council. And they are not amused.
They fear Jean-Claude's power and how he killed one of the vampires on the council, the earthmover. Also, someone really, really wants to get his revenge.

Unfortunately everyone else is swept up into the whole mess too. Anita's new leopards, as well as all the wolves and rats. But Anita can't take it. She has to fight back and save and help as many critters as she can.

This is probably one very emotional book. Unlike the others is starts to incooperate a lot more than just being a book on vampires and wereanimals. Now, Anita is swept into the world of the night. She meets up with the vampire council, gets to be the protector of a new wereanimal group that hasn't been around in these books a lot before and at the same time has to help the Regional Preternatural Investigation Team. It's one of the first books that combines all the elements that live and work in St. Louis.

Definitly a book I would recommend, if you dare to continue on in the series.

I love how we see the powers that Richard, Anita and Jean-Claude have meld and increase in this book.

Hamilton's series has gotten increasingly more sexual as it's gone on and this book continues that theme. Having left Richard for Jean Claude Anita can finally give into her passions for the sexy master vampire. Unfortunately this gets Anita a lot of backlash from her police friends who fail to distinguish the shades of grey that make up the preternatural forces, an opinion Anita used to share with them. While a lot of the tension in the book appears unnecessary, apart for the thrill factor it produces, Hamilton does build up some back story for the vampires as a race, and Jean Claude's personal history. Clearly things with the vampire council aren't over and more will be appearing about them in books to come.

The super scary vampires were great but did Anita go through a total personality change or was it just me? All of a sudden sex is no big deal to her, she's wearing fancy dresses, and the monsters she used to hate are her best friends. It would be fine if that's how she always was but it's the complete opposite of how she was in the first books. Also the time frame seemed a little weird. It felt like she's been dating for a couple months yet other characters injuries have only been there for days? It seemed weird.

I'm glad she picked the guy I wanted her to pick but she doesn't even seem sure about that decision. I'm nervous for what's going to happen.

Basically this whole book felt like it was written by a different person. There was way more sex and violence than usual and even the characters all changed. I'm feeling this series less and less.
