Staring across the table at the smiling vampire, I wondered if I got the joke or if I was the butt of the joke. There were nights when I wasn't sure which way the grave dirt crumbled.
Anita is still annoying, but slightly less so. She goes up against the vampire council with Jean-Claude...it is starting to get farcical how she is dominating the vampires, the shapeshifters, and her own necromancy all at once.
Also, I missed Edward. I have a soft spot for bounty hunters.

This was the first Anita Blake book that I read, and I found it an easy entry way. At this point, Hamilton does not spend pages explaining everything. One does wonder, however, why Anita has to do everything. Honestly, can't someone else do something heroic? The book, however, was good enough to convince me to buy the earlier novels, which were better (even though some of the events described in them do not match the decription of said events in this book).

Anita's powers grow and grow. Never mind raising the dead. Dating a vampire, being alpha-female to a pack of werewolves, acting queen and protector of wereleopards and friend to some two-legged rats, where can she go from here? She has crossed the line from fighting the monsters to snuggling with them. Very erotic, violent, funny, disgusting, suspenseful... Actually, this is the first Anita Blake novel where it took me more than a day to get past the first 100 pages. The main character is going through so many severe changes, that it affects the pace of the story. The series is changing from crime novels with a supernatural twist to not-quite-sure-what-yet. I can't wait to see, how the Anita/Richard/Jean-Claude triangle will develop in the next book. And I hope we'll get back to some real sleuthing and mystery solving...

I really loved Laurell K. Hamilton's early Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series books but I did feel like she lost the thread a bit in the middle of the series. I am glad to say that it seems like she is focusing more on the story line and less on the sex of late which makes the books better in my opinion. I think Anita is a great character and Laurell K. Hamilton can write a great plot but her overly complicated sex scenes can somewhat take away from the book.

The infamous council finally makes an appearance. In truth only two actual council members show up but the fun and games that result...eeks. Nathaniel...at this point the ultimate victim. I enjoy reading about his growth as a person. I also enjoy having Jason in the books. He becomes one of my favorite characters. I think it has to do with his attitude in general.

This was not my favorite book in this series. It was just okay. It moved the plot along but not too much added to this overall plot line.

Took me awhile to finish this because I got sidetracked but I really liked the conflict and the climax. Very interesting.
