Holling Hoodhood is convinced that his teacher, Mrs. Baker, hates him in the beginning of the book. He has to stay with her every Wednesday when half of his class goes to one religioius activity and the other half goes to another religious activity, but because he's Presbyterian, he stays at school with Mrs. Baker. Mrs. Baker teachs him Shakespeare, and he comes to love it, and he even participates in one of Shakespeare's plays. He comes to learn more about Mrs. Baker and realize that she doesn't hate him.
I personally thought this book was a little to young for me. I couldn't relate because I don't like baseball or really Shakespeare, and I no longer feel that teachers are out to get me. The characters like Holling's sister and father were interesting. I thought his mother wasn't really a big character. She was just there. The book was ok thought. I recommend it for seventh graders.

Really well written young adult fiction. I love that the author doesn't treat the audience like they're stupid. The emotional beats hit but are never overwrought. Some of the resolutions are lucky or out of nowhere but for the most part this is a resonant coming of age book.
I now understand why people say this is a must read. It is lovely and I really enjoyed it! I love that it tackled serious issues but managed to balance it with funny and sweet moments. Read or listen to this book!
Great book. I loved it. There is a reason Gary Schmidt's books have won both Newbery Honors and Printz Honors. This is a story told from Holling Hoodhood's perspective as a 7th grader and the life lessons he learns from his experiences, especially his weekly Wednesday's with Mrs. Baker.
This book had me laughing and crying, loved this book. Schmidt covers relationships, friendship, heartbreak, isolation, prejudice, success on various levels, and quotes Shakespeare. Gem of a book.
Considered a YA or middle school novel, The Wednesday Wars is smart, funny, heartwarming, and filled with Shakespeare references. I loved it!

I got his book as a gift from my cousin Becky, and it was excellent. It's the kind of book that treads very lightly, dealing with a whole host of touching, poignant things, without you ever realizing it. Highly recommended.
