4.15 AVERAGE

Coming of age is becoming one of my favorite genres, and Gary Schmidt has some of my favorite ones.

I loved this book, Holling is so funny and Mrs. Baker so sweet. Wonderful writing and wonderful story.

What a great book. Made me very nostalgic for the 60’s which I wasn’t alive for, haha. It’s basically The Wonder Years seasons 1 & 2 in 250 pages. So…

Aside from The Covenant of Water, the best book I’ve read this year.

This is a cute little quick read, where the hero is likable and kind of drives you crazy too.

I absolutely love the way Gary D Schmidt writes. This book is SO good! It doesn’t top Okay for Now for me personally, but it’s right up there with it.

I just couldn't find Holling likeable. He was kind of annoying and I couldn't get into the book.

This is my second reading. After my first, I probably would have given it 4 stars. I LOVED the first third, right up until his friend stood up for him in a surprising and touching way but after that, I kept thinking... Why isn't this book over already? It felt long. My 13 year old liked it which surprised me but I am happy to sneak in American history where I can. However, , I think that this book assumes a base knowledge that my expat kids don't have.

This book made me laugh and made me cry. What a beautiful and well thought out story. Holling Hoodhood is a very memorable character.

I just adore this book. Just as good the second time around.
