Excellent! This book made me laugh out loud and got some tears out of me too. Holling is a hoot and I love seeing his interactions with Shakespeare. My ten year old loved it too. We have gone to the Shakespeare insult sites online and have had a blast creating them. We have also started reading The Tempest so we can hear Caliban in action. (This is all by her request). Anything that can get a 10 year old to want to read Shakespeare has got to be good. :)
Fantastic! I really, really loved this one. It's another kid's book that I suspect is more appealing to adults than to kids -- hopefully I'm wrong about that.
I loved it! More fitting review to follow...

We really enjoyed this one! A lot going on, many different threads of ideas to talk about with kids.
What a sweet book about middle school and family!
I loved this. Love, loss, growing up, politics, tragedy, victory, sports, Shakespeare, camping, middle school; this book had all of it. I really enjoyed it. Very well-written, and a great story. Highly recommend this Newbery Honor book (and I must read whatever book won that year, because this was really amazing).
Toads, beetles, bats. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to read this gem.
This was a great story about a boy who is the only one left in his classroom on Wednesday afternoons when his classmates leave for their different religious devotions. Mrs. Baker has Holling Hoodhood clean erasers and study Shakespeare. Growing up in 1960 suburbia Schmidt has created a great coming of age story.
A sweet coming-of-age story set in 1968. Although I'm a few years younger, the characters brought me back to my own 7th grade adventures in suburbia. It brings up the social turmoil of the time, the stereotypical characters that you know someone who is just like that and the questioning, growing that a child does at thirteen.
It's funny, sentimental and honest. Please read this book.
