A sweet coming-of-age story set in 1968. Although I'm a few years younger, the characters brought me back to my own 7th grade adventures in suburbia. It brings up the social turmoil of the time, the stereotypical characters that you know someone who is just like that and the questioning, growing that a child does at thirteen.

It's funny, sentimental and honest. Please read this book.

Great book! read it in one day...probably would have enjoyed it even more if I were a bit more familiar with Shakespeare since he's referenced quite a bit, but still a really fun read

This book was ok. Not the greatest book I have read, but nothing wrong with it either. It is a good coming of age story about a 7th grader in 1968. I liked the structure of the book - one month/one Shakespeare play for each chapter. I'm not sure if it is the time period or not, but I don't know if I believe that a 7th grade boy would be that interested in Shakespeare or understand them quite as well as Holling does in the book. He memorizes complete passages out of numerous plays...not sure that is realistic. I did enjoy the "war" between Holling and Mrs. Baker though. I thought that was fun and really showed good writing and character development on both their parts. Not sure if Mrs. Baker really hated Holling at the beginning but she definitely became his champion at the end and this book showed her as a wonderful teacher. I am sure teachers love this book, but I am not sure kids will.

Laugh out loud funny! I LOVE Mrs. Baker! It's a great middle school book!!! So rich with history and life! I can't wait for my kids to be old enough to talk about it with me! Another fantastic Newbery honor winner!

Probably my favorite children's book of all time. It has everything.

I love books that make me feel light, that make me laugh with joy and delight when I finish them. This one does. But on books, like in life, you have to through the heaviness of it all first, to really appreciate the lightness. This book does that beautifully. I loved it.

Laughed. Cried. Remembered my childhood. Cleverly written. Loved the descriptions and the way Shakespeare was woven into the story. Ours is a family of teachers. This story shows teacher quirks and the importance of their investment into the lives of their students. I loved it.

Truly delightful. I'm glad I experienced this book.

I love Shakespeare and totally enjoyed how his plays were used to support the story in this book. I wish it were as easy to read, understand, and memorize Shakespeare as it was for the 7th grade protagonist. The narration put me in mind of Double Trouble for Rupert, a book I enjoyed as a kid. This book would be great for a discussion group, it touches so many different topics.

Loved every page. Very funny, sweet, and clever. Full review coming on ldswbr.com soon.

Thanks for recommending it Marnie!
