I found the characters to be flat, the style of writing at about elementary school level and the book as a whole rather kitsch.

This book was incredible. Well-paced, well-written, and with some of the most lovable, memorable characters I've ever seen. The review on the cover of my edition of the book says it feels like being wrapped in a big gay blanket, and that about describes it. Absolutely worth a read.
