“Kinderen droegen hun gezicht als iets wat moest meegroeien, iets wat ze pas over vele jaren zou passen. Het zat bijna altijd te hoog, ze moesten op hun tenen staan en flink hun best doen om de beelden aan de binnenkant van de oogleden te bekijken.”

I love Tove Ditlevsen, she has such a unique voice. I always enjoy reading her work and this was no exception. It’s impressive to be able to fit a simile into nearly every sentence without making the writing feel overdone. It was certainly an uncomfortable, claustrophobic read, made extra unsettling when you consider the authors own death by suicide. But I really did enjoy it, and it made me think from a new perspective.
it was good but it felt so?? translated?? like it was clear that there was a layer between the author and my reading experience

I end up adoring everything I read by Tove Ditlevsen (the writing, the plot, the pacing, the characters) but she often doesn’t hook me fully until 2/3-3/4 of my way through a book which makes reading painstaking at times. BUT ALSO she gifts the world with sentences that simply stop you in your tracks. Take what you will from my 3 star rating on this one but don’t let it stop you from reading her works!!!
