"You really have to hand it to them- they've taken a pristine wilderness that spanned the globe and brought it to heel with the concrete and firearms and technology. For this, they must be congratulated. Without their intervention, the world would be little more than a ramshackle, overgrown Arcadia.
I wish I had killed more of them"

A tale of climate change, extinction, smuggling, racism, scientific enquiry and Irish rebellion told from the vantage of Mammut bones as his life story. From his death against early humans, Mammut witnesses the birth of America, the Irish rebellion and his eventual auction at a museum! Accompanied by interjection from his (sometimes rapt audience) including a stuffed penguin, mummy hand and the skull of T. Bataar.

The story drags a little (hence the 4 not 5 star) but its witty!

This book intended to be witty, but the gimmick didn't work for me.... mostly it was annoying or simply ineffective. However, I appreciate the novelty of the approach. I did learn about the theory that mastodon herds kept the permafrost intact by stamping down the ice into the ground and by controlling the kind of vegetation that grew (more grass, less trees), and that current efforts to restore mammoths have this ecological effect in mind.

Great idea. Mammoth skeleton as narrator. I liked the beginning and the end. I thought the middle about 17th century Irish rebels was a bit dull and felt off topic

"Death reduces all men to their composite parts"

Not my usual genre but an enjoyable break
