Okay, I seriously meant it when I said this book was perfect. I love every single thing about it and the writing is so good and the plot is fantastic and for a while I tried to read a bunch of other military books because I'd thought they'd be like this one but they're not, this one is seriously special. As mentioned with the previous book I have read this trilogy A LOT and still every time I read this one, whenever one of Laurent's plans goes perfectly (or when Damen realizes that everything that has happened has been Laurent's plan all along) I seriously still get goosebumps. It's great. More spoilers for one of my favorite parts.

Spoiler
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this little exchange of dialogue between Damen and Laurent, when the Patrans unexpectedly come to help Laurent defeat his uncle's force.
"You know, the slaves you gifted to [the Patrans] are worth almost
the same as the men that he’s given you.’
‘I would say exactly that much.’
‘I thought you helped them out of compassion.’
‘No, you didn’t,’ said Laurent."
Ugh I'm sure it sounds dumb out of context but I can't stop thinking about this. This is one of those things that was set up in the first book and pays off beautifully here.
And the fact that Laurent KNEW about Damen, this whole time, gives every interaction between them a different twist. Re-reading it means that we know that Laurent knows, but Damen doesn't know, and it's just so perfect and watching Laurent struggle to put aside what he thinks he knows about Damen and just accept him for who he actually is and what he did is so good. UGH it's perfect.

The tension in this book is INSANE. there is so much happening and so much in the way of political intruge and sharp minded planning. even though there were so many twists, everything had its purpose and made complete sense

The relationship between Laurent and Damen is fascinating to see unfold, and while it can sometimes be a bit strained, you can see that it's natural that allows it all to happen in the way it does

A friend once said that Damen is kind of an unreliable narrator in this and I do think its so true - there is so much he just doesnt see ir doesnt figure iut but it gives the reader enough clues for you to infer it yourself and even when things are revealed they are not fully explained as the writer already knows you know.... It's just Damen being Damen

one thing I really likes is that the simplest of differences can change the whole story - and intentionally so - you see every thought behind the story and its easy to say oh well Damen could have escaped here but then that means XYZ would have gone another way and hed still be worse off for it. the attention. to detail in this was is insane

as a final just passing note because I can't make this any more coherent. there are parts of this book that made me feral and foam at the mouth..... gods it is so good
