Ik lees niet zo vaak biografieën en ben sowieso geen fan van boeken over de politiek. Dit boek van Michelle Obama sprak me dan ook niet per se aan, maar ik kwam de laatste tijd opeens steeds dingen uit of over dit boek tegen. Toen hij kort daarna in de app van de bieb verscheen, besloot ik eens een poging te wagen. En ik moet zeggen: het is zeker de moeite waard. Vooral het stuk over de jeugd van Michelle vond ik interessant. Het is een enorm slimme en inspirerende vrouw en ik waardeer hoe eerlijk ze is over haar afkeer als het om politiek gaat, iets wat je niet echt zou verwachten.
Wel is het boek naar mijn mening te lang. De eerste helft vlotte wel snel, maar tijdens de tweede helft sloop mijn aandacht steeds verder weg. Het werd te veel een "Barack is perfect en dit hebben we allemaal voor goeds gedaan", wat op zich prima is, maar te lang doorging. Met als gevolg dat ik het een week liet liggen en niet meer doorging met lezen, tot het echt nodig was omdat de leentermijn van de bieb bijna verstreek. Bij het stuk over de wapenwet kwam mijn volle aandacht weer terug en daarna had ik het boek snel uit. Kortom: de moeite waard, maar zeker 100 pagina's te lang.

My only regret was not listening to this on audiobook. It's read by Michelle Obama herself and others have described the experience as being like grabbing coffee with her.
I first heard about the book on the 2 Dope Queens podcast and was intrigued by her candidness about miscarriage and her experience as the first black First Lady.
I already had a high opinion of Michelle Obama before reading the book and this only increased as I worked my way through her memoir. She's smart, independent, strong, funny, warm. She knows when to be serious and when to let loose.
I really enjoyed the insights into her life before meeting Barack, what it was like campaigning across America and eventually, living in the White House. There was so much I didn't know and I appreciated how candid she was. She wasn't side-stepping around anything uncomfortable.

Ok, so let me start by saying if I could have given this book more than 5 stars, I definitely would have done so. My one recommendation would be if you can, listen to the audio book. Hearing the book narrated by Michelle Obama made this book exceptional. I learned things about Michelle that I did not know and that I could definitely relate to. I cried and sometimes laughed out loud. When I finished the audio book, I felt like I had just spent time with a good friend. I highly, highly recommend this book / audio book.
