Nona!
I absolutely loved this story. I read it in one day, that's how invested I became in Nona's journey. This is brutal and definitely has some sections that are hard to read. But...it's also inspiring and hopeful.
There are elements of found family, growth and betrayal.
I didn't find one word out of place or unnecessary. Brilliant.

I had a hard time connecting with the main character, which made her training very hard to get through. Interesting idea for a series just not for me.

Generally kind of fun. The writing takes some pretty drastic dips into painfully purple bullshit whenever Lawrence is trying to get deep or paint a dramatic scene. Nona is certainly a hardened kid, but she doesn't think or act like one at all. A lot of the dialog between her and her friends reads as grizzled veterans, not as traumatized children. But it's still fairly enjoyable. I hope Lawrence got a stronger editor for the second one.

Audiobook
Narrator 5 stars- excellent
Story 4 stars good but I felt like I missed something
A young girl is saved from hanging by a nun with some different beliefs than the nuns I'm used to. She is pursued by a nasty man with revenge in his black heart. The nuns take her in fight for her, while teaching her. Some are assassins, some have a wicked mean streak. BTW This is not a religious book. The bad is relentless, super nasty, and powerful.
There are powers, touched on, whispered of almost. I really couldn't nail down what were the powers, she could they could but it was never really exposed ? I felt like I missed something somewhere, did I ? Maybe this is something explored in the next book
This could have been a 5 star book except for the long length of details and lack of action. Even so, with all the info dumping it was a solid read, fun with great characters. I enjoyed reading every page but it seemed like it took forever to get someplace.
I think I'll read the next book, we'll see.

I go back and forth between a 4 and 4.5
The only thing bothering me is the lenght. This felt like two books in one. Still I want to continue this serie.
