A dark, dystopian tale of contemporary Caracas, which has fallen into chaos and violence. The premise is interesting, but the story arc played out a bit simplistically and in a kind of pat manner. However, the descriptions of civil chaos was vivid and evocative.

I really appreciated this hard-core view of Venezuelan realities. When our narrator got locked out of her apartment midway through the book I was afraid the story was going to become too bleak to finish but then we got one upward twist followed by some ethically challenging possibilities which kept the plot moving on an interesting path. This would be a great one to discuss with other readers either aware of life in Venezuela or interested in the motivations of refugees.

Devastating read - I had no idea of the suffering and trauma happening in Venezuela so recently and appreciate this author for telling such a moving story of survival amidst war and destabilization. This is a tough read. The format of switching between past and present can sometimes cut short the emotional weight of what's happening in the present, but I was glad for that as staying with some of those scenes for longer would have made it difficult to continue.

Check the trigger warnings for this - I think an important piece of fiction shedding light on atrocities in Venezuela and the lengths people must go to come out alive.
