If you like hades/persephone retellings, this is a good dark and twisty one. On one hand, our FMC is a vigilante serial killer, and on the other, our tall dark and broody MMC is out for fratricide and justice.

Good but got a little repetitive and rushed toward the end. Good twist at the end though. Would read the next book
Poor editing. Writing style not for me.
I have been really struggling with getting into fantasy books recently and have been waiting for one to hook me in and help me rediscover my love for the genre. When I received this ARC of the Umbra King and started it- I couldn’t put it down. I think I finished it in a day. This 4.5 star read has so many tropes I love, enemies-to-lovers, soulmates/fated mates, a badass FMC, and a MMC that falls first.
Rory sees the color of people’s souls and has spent the past few years of her life searching for her twin’s killer. When she is caught for her vigilantism, she gets sent to Vincula, the prison realm ruled by The Umbra King, Caius. While there, Rory continues to seek vengeance for her sister’s murder and even with her hatred of Caius being clear and his goal to keep her at arm’s length, the two can’t really seem to stay away from each other. With destinies more entwined than either anticipate, this first book of their story sets up the continuation of their story and the bigger picture.
This book was exactly what I had been hoping for and I can’t wait to read the sequel. This is my first book by Jamie Applegate Hunter and most definitely not my last. A quality Romantasy story and I can’t wait for book 2!

Abandonando en el 55%>. Empezó genial con una protagonista bastante guay pero luego el libro cayó en un sinsentido alguno donde se ve perfectamente que la autora ha intentado meter los 7 millones de tropes del romantasy con calzador.
I went through this one pretty fast, so I'd say I liked the story :)
The world-building was great, and I really enjoyed how everything was conceived, the premise, the society. I always enjoy an enemies-to-lovers trope, don't get me wrong, but maybe this one was a bit too fast-paced for me.
And, one thing I really really didn't like was some of the language used. Not meaning to sound like a prude, but I hate using the word *ussy and *um, especially in novels mostly written for women. Maybe that's just my pet peeve, but it really ruins it a bit for me.
Still, I am an overall fan and I'm going straight to book number 2 to see how everything wraps up.
