Well-off illustrator spinster on the spectrum manifests the hottie war-hero Scotsman of her dreams and then proceeds to do ALL the emotional labor. The third act breakup isn’t nearly as traumatic as usual for which this earns extra points by me.
Loved this book. Of course Tessa Dare can pretty much do no wrong, so I suppose that’s not too surprising. I loved Maddie and Logan, and love that they both have a traumatic past that causes present-day problems, which they help each other get through. Maddie is maginificently weird (which is fantastic), and Logan and those letters... I am die.
The (limited) supporting cast is also a treat, especially Maddie’s rather eccentric aunt and the hulking but addled Grant.
This is the third book in a series but is easily totally perfect as a stand alone. I’m pretty sure what connects the series is that they’re all left castles by the same fellow, so you’re not missing out on anything or spoiling the first two books in the series by reading this one first.
I spent most of this novel unable to put it down, with my heart in my throat and tears welling in my eyes. Definitely one of those books where you just ache for the characters. If you’re looking for a light fluffy read, this may not be the book for you as it rather tears at your heart (but I do promise you a happy ending).

Overall a very fun read. However, I kinda expected more tension and drama from the interesting premise. Instead, things are resolved in a way that is too quick in favor of a more rom-com setup.
And while I love Maddie’s character, Logan’s kinda falls short to be honest. It’s as if Tessa Dare wants to write a tortured hero but is afraid to do anything that is even remotely too torturous. Same with the side characters who feel less real. (I was kinda sad not seeing Maddie’s family given how much they’re depicted in her letters in the prologue)
And the jokes and callbacks of the characters quickly become repetitive.

I found this book quite enjoyable, and most of that came from the interactions between Maddie and Logan. Even though Maddie was panic-inducingly shy in crowds, I found her refreshing in how she dealt with Logan and his men after they showed up at her castle. Logan might have been brutish, but she could read him and see all his empty spaces. And with her quiet nature, she started to fill them.
Logan had his own agenda, determined to take care of the men who had followed him into battle. He was there for them, always supportive, and I love how all of that quickly turned to supporting Maddie and helping her discover the strength she didn't know she had.
I'm very particular with what m/f romance I read, but the blurb was intriguing. I'm glad I took a chance on it because this book fit nicely into my parameters.

Pace was fast but loved the slowburn with the romance. Book ended on a wholesome note.
