Weaker than the previous volumes in that not much happens either action-wise or emotionally. Sure there's some Gert/Chase and Gert/Victor actual talk, but it left a lot to be desired.

Rainbow Rowell is here to destroy my emotional wellbeing and I love it.

“Humanity! I will never be the man you want me to be. The only man I will ever be is Doom. If I turn my back on him... all that’s left is ‘sprockets and scrap metal.’”

Poignant moment in the grocery store, where Chase is masculine enough to shop for menstruation supplies without acting all awkward about it. The relationship reveal to Chase and the important conversations he and Gert have about ages and love that had been put on hold. Doombot’s repair and struggle and his friendship with Victor. Molly’s still holding out hope for her parents. Karolina’s good deeds and Nico’s reluctance (did she really make a better deal with her staff? Remains to be seen).

“I will endeavor to be more respectful, Prideling. You must teach me which soulless machines are friends, and which are planet-fouling clutter.”
Molly: “A person can be both.”

Even though I will definitely stick around to read more, this issue disappointed me with its weak central plot and fragmented focus on too many characters. I only felt invested in a few of the storylines, and none of them lasted long enough to carry my interest through the choppy narrative.

Isn't that just Runaways in a nutshell?
Whole lot of fun, but a whole lot of "reasonable" angst that mucks up the fun, only for the fun to come back in full force.
Life is like a hurricane indeed...
Also, I could not help but get Steven-Universe-reviving-Jasper-in-the-bathtub vibes from how Victor just...spontaneously rebuilt himself...even though Steven Universe Future aired in 2020, 3 years after this book was published.

I would not have thought it was possible; I love Brain K Vaughan and I think his Runaways was one of the greatest comic series of the last 20 years -- But Rainbow Rowell's Runaways are even better. Not as dark as Vaughan's but with equal emotional depth and more humor. I hope this series runs for a long long time.
