She’s fighting for her life and the truth of who she is. This feminist high fantasy tackles purity culture, racism, and sexism and more in a high fantasy adventure. I felt there was a disconnect between the action and the audience. It’s written like a younger YA but the plot is often bleak and brutal.

Rating: 3.5

I haven't picked up a fantasy book in a hot minute, but with picking this book up, I've been reminded of my love for fantasy and with it the plots, action, and world building that I adore. The first half of the book is by far the best and it just goes down hill from there. Right off the bat the reader understands what world our MC is living in, a very very VERY misogynistic land, and we encounter dark aspects of this life. *Please look up trigger warnings for this book, there are plenty!!!*

Our MC's character development is good but not great and at some points in the book, it feels a bit rushed. The side characters are just there to support the MC, which I'm not a fan of. Because of this, they have no development whatsoever and soon become very bland characters. Speaking of development, the romance between Deka (MC) and the love interest is so boring and I wanted to skip all scenes with them in it together.

The plot in the first half of the book is what truly grasped my interest. I loved how it kept you wanting more and asking question after question. I did not like how the questions were answered, however. It wasn't that the answers were necessarily bad, they were just predictable and flavorless. Going off of that, the end fight scene/ending in general was VERY anti-climatic and I wanted more. I have no idea how Forna is going to make this into a possible trilogy, (a definite sequel), because I thought that the ending had no room for more. It ended on a good note with no cliff hanger, so what else? I'll be reading the sequel when it drops, but I don't know how I will react to it.

I like the world this story takes place in. It was a wonderful read on its own. Perfectly serviceable for a fun read. It’s part of a series but it reads like a standalone so I’m a little wary of the other books jumping the shark. The morals are a little hamfisted, but it’s forgivable.
