When I first started this book and struggled to become connected. The struggle was not because of character development but more the fantasy premise of the book. I do not tend to be a fantasy. However this book was highly recommended so I continued on. I’m glad I did. The main character reminds me greatly of Katniss Everdeen: strength, perseverance, friendship, family. Highly recommend reading — moreso if you are a fantasy fan!
This was amazing. The story of Deka, her world, and the horrors that she and her fellow warriors are put through made every emotion I have run rampant.
There are twists and turns and surprises I did not see coming which laid bare my feelings and riled me up!
This author did a fantastic job with symbolism and truth of reality woven into this fictional story. It is gut wrenching and unforgettable.
Crazy good story! 5 stars

A fantasy book with promise and a unique setting of golden blooded immortals, but executed too fast and loose. I liked the premise but it felt like characters were too quick to friendship and love, and the ending came out of almost nowhere. It was evident there would be a twist in the alaki/deathshriek/jatu fight, but what ends up happening defies logic and has people switch sides with essentially a couple lines of inspiring dialogue. The emperor isn't given enough time to flesh out or be interesting, and the main cast is thin as well.

This was surprising. I didn't had much expectations going into this book. I enjoyed it because it has a few new ideas and while I always struggle a bit with starting new fantasy series, I had a relative easy time with this book.
And yet it had its flaws. It's more gory than you would expect from young adult, the trauma isn't dealt with, and there was also quite a lot misogyny happening in this (not glorified but happening). Also it was a bit too insta lovey and insta friendship, and ti be honest I found the love part a bit too abrupt and I would have prefered it if if had been a woman and man friendship happening. For me that came a bit out of nowhere.
Also I had a impression while reading that it could be made into a movie, and apparently there are talks of an adaptation, so I wasn't alone with my gut feeling.
